Information for Romani Ukrainian Refugees (UNHCR 2)

The project funded by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees based in the Czech Republic (The UN Refugee Agency) was implemented from 1 1, 2023 to 31.12.2024.

The aim of the project was to ensure protection and necessary information for Ukrainian Romani refugees/asylum seekers who were present at that time or whose arrival in the Czech Republic was expected, and further assist with the integration of individuals who settled in the Czech Republic, through

  • monitoring the main areas of presence of Ukrainian Romani refugees/asylum seekers;
  • providing social and legal assistance/advice and recommendations to the relevant entity
  • analyzing the specific needs of the Romani population and dynamics of movement within and outside the Czech Republic.

Who was the project intended for?

The project assisted Ukrainian refugees of Romani origin fleeing from Ukraine. The project covered the entire Czech Republic, which was divided into 3 main regions for its purposes based on the most frequent occurrence of the target group:

  • Moravian-Silesian Region
  • Plzeň Region and Karlovy Vary Region
  • Central Bohemian Region, South Moravian Region, and Vysočina Region

Depending on the situation's development, other regions could also be covered.

The project focused on:
  • Ukrainian Romani refugees who obtained temporary protection;
  • Ukrainian Romani asylum seekers awaiting confirmation of temporary protection, including those accommodated and those placed in temporary accommodation facilities established by authorities;
  • Persons of Romani origin who were not granted temporary protection but were still in the Czech Republic and were vulnerable.

What the project offered:
  • Process of identification and registration of Ukrainian Romani refugees/asylum seekers;
  • humanitarian aid and support for the integration of refugee groups.
  • In all locations, social workers provided clients with social support and counseling to address their situations. Social workers worked individually with clients to identify their needs, and a weekly community plan was developed for each location.

Part of the support for social workers also included:
  • Contact with institutions (e.g. labor office, banks...) for the purpose of filling out online and offline administrative forms;
  • Support for better understanding of localities and their surroundings, understanding of local systems and processes (e.g. public transport, job market, cultural customs...) and a broader understanding of the main administrative and social aspects of the Czech Republic;
  • Translation;
  • Facilitating contacts with families in Ukraine;
  • Transportation to institutional meetings, medical consultations when hosting far from cities and services.
