Miri Giľi - My Song IX
The Miri Giľi (My Song in Romani) project focuses on supporting young musical talents and presenting Roma culture to the general public. In 2024, the ninth edition of the competition took place, with singers from across the country applying. An expert jury selected the semifinalists who competed in Prague, and then decided on the finalists advancing to the grand finale.
The project was implemented from January 1, 2024, to December 31, 2024.
Project Goal:
The project was primarily aimed at the Roma minority and the majority society, due to their interconnectedness, which the project also strives for. The meeting of these groups led to the dismantling of mutual prejudices and stereotypes through their own experiences. The project's benefit for the target group is seen in the opportunity for the Roma minority to present themselves as artistically and organizationally skilled, contributing to Prague's cultural program.
The project, especially a one-day music festival, also targeted the general public. The festival was free of charge, making it accessible to all and facilitating the non-violent connection between the Roma minority and the majority. Additionally, the festival had a culturally educational dimension, allowing the majority society to learn about Roma culture, which is usually only marginally presented.
The project's implementation expanded the accessibility of Roma culture, highlighting its uniqueness. The theme is the interconnection of cultures and the introduction of Roma culture to the broader public. The project team and competition jury were tailored to this, with experts from the field, Roma representatives, and representatives from the majority. The competition has long been attracting participants not only from the Roma community but also from the majority and other minorities.
