Miri Giľi - Her Song VIII
The Miri Giľi project focuses on supporting young musical talents and presenting Roma culture to the general public. In 2023, the eighth edition of the competition took place, with singers from across the country participating. An expert jury selected the semifinalists who competed in Prague, and then decided on the finalists advancing to the grand finale.
The project was implemented from January 1, 2023, to December 31, 2023
Project goal:
The project was primarily aimed at the Roma minority and the majority society, due to their interconnectedness, which the project seeks to strengthen. The project led to the meeting of these groups and through their own experience, also to the dismantling of mutual prejudices and stereotypes. The benefit of the project for the target group is seen in the fact that the Roma minority had the opportunity to present itself as artistically and organizationally skilled, contributing to the cultural program of Prague. The project, especially a one-day music festival, was also targeted at the general public. Entry to the festival was free, making this event accessible to all and thus leading to the non-violent connection of the Roma minority with the majority.
The festival also had a culturally educational potential, through which the majority society can learn and be informed about the culture of the Roma, which is otherwise only marginally presented.
The implementation of the project allowed to expand the accessibility of especially Roma culture, in which we see its uniqueness. The theme was the connection of cultures and the presentation of Roma culture to the wider public. The implementation team and the competition jury were adapted to this, with experts from the industry, Roma representatives, and representatives from the majority. The competition has long been attended not only by contestants from the Roma community, but also from the majority or other minorities.
