Support for Ukrainian Roma refugees in the Czech Republic

This project is funded by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (The UN Refugee Agency) based in the Czech Republic.

Project goal:

The project aims to provide protection, information, and support to Ukrainian Roma refugees and asylum seekers who are or will be located in the Czech Republic. We assist with their integration and orientation through:


  • monitoring areas where Ukrainian Roma refugees are most commonly found;
  • providing social and legal assistance and assistance in contacting relevant institutions;
  • analyzing the specific needs of Roma refugees and monitoring their movements within and outside the Czech Republic.

Who is the project intended for:

The project is focused on Ukrainian Roma refugees and asylum seekers fleeing from Ukraine. Assistance is provided throughout the Czech Republic, with the main target areas being:
  • Moravian-Silesian Region,
  • Plzeň and Karlovy Vary Region,
  • Central Bohemian, South Moravian Region, and Vysočina Region.

If needed, support can be extended to other regions.

The project focuses on:

  • Ukrainian Roma refugees who have obtained temporary protection;
  • Ukrainian Roma asylum seekers awaiting confirmation of temporary protection;
  • Persons of Roma origin who have not obtained temporary protection but are still in the Czech Republic and are in a problematic situation.

What the project offers:

  • Identification and registration of Ukrainian Roma refugees and asylum seekers;
  • Humanitarian aid and support for refugee integration;
  • Social counseling - workers help clients navigate in a new environment and develop community plans based on the needs of individual locations.

Additional support from social workers includes:


Help with administration
Filling out online and paper forms (employment office, banks, health insurance, etc.)
Better understanding of the surroundings
Orientation in local conditions (public transport, job market, cultural customs, social system of the Czech Republic), interpreting and translations.
Kontakt
Mediation of contact with families in Ukraine
Transportation to meetings
Accompaniment to institutions, to doctors, or to authorities in cases where refugees are accommodated outside of cities and services.
