UNHCR Ukraine

The project was funded by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees based in the Czech Republic (The UN Refugee Agency). The project provided support to social workers and their team leaders in comprehensive work with Roma refugees in defined regions, in collaboration with partner organizations Khamoro and Vzájemné soužití from the RomanoNet network.

Project Goals

The aim of the project was to provide a specific protective response for Ukrainian Roma refugees/asylum seekers who were present at the time or were expected to arrive in the Czech Republic through:

  • monitoring the main areas of presence of Ukrainian Roma refugees/asylum seekers,
  • providing social and legal assistance/advice and recommendations to the relevant entity,
  • analyzing the specific needs of the Roma population and the dynamics of movement within and outside the Czech Republic.

Who was the project intended for?

  • The project primarily assisted Ukrainian refugees of Roma origin fleeing from Ukraine.
  • Initially, the focus was on 6 regions, but depending on the situation, additional areas could also be covered.

The project focused on:

  • Roma Ukrainian refugees who obtained temporary protection,
  • Roma Ukrainian asylum seekers awaiting confirmation of temporary protection, including those accommodated in temporary accommodation facilities established by authorities,
  • individuals of Roma origin who were not granted temporary protection but are still in the Czech Republic and are vulnerable

What the project also offered

All organizations within the RomanoNet network also communicated with a Roma coordinator in each region, whether it was sharing their analyses or responding to specific situations at the request of authorities. Support from social workers also included liaising with institutions (such as the labor office, banks...), assistance with administrative matters, support for better understanding of localities and their surroundings, understanding local systems and processes (such as public transport, job market, cultural customs...) etc.
