Fathers read to children - support for the relationship between a father in VTOS and a child

About the project: From January 1 to December 31, 2024, we implemented the pilot project Fathers read to children, which was funded by the ČEZ Foundation and carried out in cooperation with Stráž pod Ralskem prison.

Project goal: The aim was to strengthen the relationship between a parent (or grandparent) in the execution of a custodial sentence (VTOS) and their child/grandchild through reading children's books. The project also developed children's relationship with reading and created space for deeper connection with a loved one.

How it worked:

  • parent or grandparent in prison read a selected children's book on audio or video recording;
  • the recording was edited - it could be supplemented with music or images;
  • the finished recordings were given to the child or grandchild, who can listen to them anytime and hear the voice of a loved one.

Benefits for children:

  • they saw and heard that their parent/grandparent is thinking of them and cares about them;
  • they gained a positive experience with books and strengthened their relationship with reading;
  • they had a form of contact that overcomes distance and visitation restrictions.

Benefits for parents in VTOS:

  • they could actively participate in the child's life even from prison;
  • they strengthened their parental role and awareness of responsibility;
  • they had the opportunity to escape from the prison culture and take on a positive caring role.
