Humanitarian Aid and Development Help in Roma Settlements in the Zakarpattia Region in Ukraine
The project focused on humanitarian and development assistance in the Ukrainian city of Mukachevo and its surroundings was funded by the Choose Love foundation based in the UK under the auspices of the Prism - The Gift Fund. It took place from 1st October 2024 to 28th February 2025. Project goal:
The project aimed at stabilizing and improving the living conditions of Ukrainian Roma communities in these locations through:
- distribution of humanitarian aid – food, hygiene products, clothing, individual assistance;
- operation of an integration center in Mukachevo – educational activities for children and support for the entire community.
It built on previous humanitarian projects that focused primarily on ensuring basic needs - fighting hunger, access to drinking water, heating homes. The trust we have gained allows us to further develop long-term integration and educational activities that strengthen not only children but entire communities.
Another key goal of the project was to support people directly in their home locations to prevent forced migration and subsequent refugee crisis, which would further worsen their situation.
Who was the project intended for?
The project focused on the most vulnerable groups of residents in Mukachevo, Perechyn, and Zarichevo. Thanks to cooperation with local workers, it was able to effectively respond to the current needs of the community. Regular deliveries of humanitarian aid were always adapted to the real situation on the ground.
What did the project offer?
The project was based on two main pillars:
- The project included educational activities for Roma children who did not have access to mainstream education. Such activities help level their chances and involve them in the education system.
- It also included preschool preparation for the youngest children and tutoring for older students, especially in Czech, mathematics, and other key subjects.
- We also support the whole community - we help with literacy, reading, writing, and understanding administrative processes so that people can better navigate their rights and obligations.
- We help people in need by providing food packages and hygiene products that cover basic needs.
- During the cold months, winter clothing and equipment such as jackets, shoes, blankets, or sleeping bags were distributed as part of the project.
- Individual assistance was also provided, such as wheelchairs, accompanying to the doctor, or help with securing healthcare.
- We respond to changing situations - for example, in winter, we helped with heating households or ensuring access to water and warmth for homeless people and socially disadvantaged families.
The project was flexible and adapted to the current needs of people in these areas. Thanks to that, it could effectively help and contribute to improving the living conditions of local communities.
